Qatar Standardization

Qatar Standardization refers to the system and processes managed by Qatar’s government to ensure that products, services, and systems meet consistent quality, safety, environmental, and efficiency standards. These standards are typically aligned with international norms but are tailored to meet the specific needs, laws, and conditions of Qatar.

Key Body: Qatar General Organization for Standardization (QS)

In Qatar, Qatar General Organization for Standardization (QS) — under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MOCI) — is the main authority responsible for standardization, metrology (measurement standards), and conformity assessment.

Core Functions of Qatar Standardization:

1. Developing National Standards:

Creating Qatar-specific standards for products, services, industrial processes, and systems.
Often based on ISO, IEC, GCC, or other international benchmarks.

2.Conformity Assessment:

Ensuring imported or locally made goods comply with Qatari standards.
This includes testing, certification, and inspection procedures.

3. Metrology:

Regulating and maintaining standards for weights and measurements used in trade and industry.

4.Product Certification:

Issuing certificates of conformity (CoCs) to allow products to enter the Qatari market.
Especially important for regulated goods such as electrical appliances, toys, building materials, etc.

5.Regulatory Compliance:

Supporting implementation of Technical Regulations for safety, health, and environmental protection.

Importance of Qatar Standardization:

* Protects consumer safety and  public health.
*Facilitates trade by ensuring compatibility and quality.
*Supports sustainable development and economic diversification.
* Promotes innovation by providing clear technical guidelines.

If you’re dealing with product imports, manufacturing, or construction in Qatar, compliance with Qatari standards is typically mandatory and enforced through customs clearance and market surveillance.

World Diamond Council

The World Diamond Council is an international organization that represents the entire diamond value chain, including mining, manufacturing, trade, and retail. The Council was established in July 2000 in the city of Antwerp – Belgium. It includes prominent representatives from the International Diamond Manufacturers Association and the World Federation of Diamond Bourses, along with diamond trading centers around the world.

The creation of the Council came in response to the challenges of using diamond revenues in financing conflicts, where it was tasked with developing strategies to combat what is known as “conflict diamonds.” In December 2000, the United Nations General Assembly adopted, after negotiations between governments and industry, a historic resolution supporting the establishment of an international system for issuing certificates for rough diamonds.

The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme was established, entering into force in 2003 with the participation of civil society and the diamond industry. This system contributed to reducing the trade of “conflict diamonds” to less than 1% of the total global diamond production.

Today, the World Diamond Council has become the main reference for all working groups of the Kimberley Process, playing a central role in policy-setting and future reforms.

The Council is currently chaired by Stephen Fischer from the United States – a member of the Antwerp Council, Belgium.

THE WORLD JEWELLERY CONFEDERATION (CIBJO)

The World Jewellery Confederation, or CIBJO (Confédération International de la Bijouterie, Joaillerie, Orfèvrerie des Diamants, Perles et Pierres), is the primary international jewellery, gemstones and precious metals association, representing the interests of all individuals, organisations and companies earning their livelihoods from the mining, processing, manufacturing and trade of these products. It is the oldest such organisation, having originally been established in 1926.
